Abstract: sistent data source from the vital statis- tics system and, moreover, used live births as a consistent denominator when subtracting our ratios.Dr. Bracken's extrapolation from the gestational-age distribution of New Haven Medicaid patients showed that the main effect of a two-week delay in this population would be to increase the number of pregnancies carried to term because they were too far ad- vanced in gestation for an abortion. Moreover, his hypothesis that Medic- aid patients are at greater risk of death from legal abortion than non-Medicaid patients is supported by recent data from California.3Even though we are somewhat hesitant to generalize na- tionally from local data, we agree with Dr. Bracken's conclusions that Medic- aid patients are a high-risk group, and policies which discourage early deci- sion-making about unwanted preg- nancies serve to increase their risks.
