L'organisation de l'espace dans deux ateliers de potiers traditionnels de Thasos
Year: 1995
Type: article
Abstract: The first part of this article comprises a detailed description of the installations in the two workshops, covered and open-air, and emphasis is given to their function and architectural interdependence. In the second part, based on a detailed examination, the positions of each structure are shown to be the result of a detailed plan, drawn up in advance of the work of construction. It takes into account the most fundamental factors relating to the efficiency of the work in each workshop (work potential, most economical investment of time and labour, maximum reduction of the risk of accidents during transport). To check this proposition, it was assumed as a working hypothesis that the distances between the parts of each workshop, functionally connected, would have been as short as possible and would have represented movements in a straight rather than a curved line. A summation of the total of these routes, in a one-way or two-way direction, shows a virtual predominance of the former. There existed therefore, according to us, a planned spatial organisation designed by the potters themselves.
