Abstract: Throughout a century, from Durkheim to Bourdieu, french sociology claimed to be a science and thus tried to better solve social problems whereas philosophy was considered as only able to put forward them. The self assertion of sociology was made easier as the University was more and more divided in autonomous fields. Granted by a defined methodology, sociology was supposed to be an ordinary science. But it was a restricted independence seeing that sponsors and the State proposed issues and acted upon the way to treat them. More sociologists boasted to be free, more they were oblivious of being in fact subordinate and limited by facts. Should we not return to the suggestion of Husserl who advised to « the civil servants of Humanity » to be enough ambitions to go beyond the actual facts and to anew refer to Humanity as their horizon ?
