Abstract: The commitment of individuals to development in general and personal development in particular is critical to longer term organisational success. In a wider sense it is claimed that organisations are able to support and enable change through training and development. However individuals find it difficult to recognise investment in training and development for them as individuals. In particular professional qualifications are pursued because they are recognised as important for CVs, personal profile and career development. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) Professional Assessment Scheme is a flexible, suitable opportunity to allow both personal and professional development to be pursued. This article examines the CIPD scheme and its benefits for both the individual and organisation and concludes that although the scheme offers an opportunity for organising professionally related learning in a systematic way there are a considerable range of benefits which have hitherto gone unrecognised.
