BJU International Special Supplement Proceedings of the First World Summit on Kidney Surgery
Year: 2005
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: This special supplement issue of the BJU International is based on the proceedings of the First World Summit on Kidney Surgery, held at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation on February 5–7, 2003. This 3-day conference, aimed at an in-depth evaluation of renal surgery, had three primary aspects: (i) detailed discussions were held on various facets of kidney surgery, both for benign and malignant conditions; (ii) live, simultaneous surgical demonstrations were presented for various renal operations in all three major surgical domains (open, endourological and laparoscopic). The following operations were performed live: laparoscopic radical nephrectomy (transperitoneal and retroperitoneal), partial nephrectomy (open and laparoscopic), laparoscopic renal cryoablation, laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, laparoscopic pyeloplasty, percutaneous renal surgery and ureteroscopic surgery; (iii) ‘hands-on’ animal laboratory sessions allowed interested participants to perform various laparoscopic procedures on porcine and canine models. A unique feature of the Summit was the live telecast to nine international countries: Kuwait, Netherlands, Japan, Korea, Brazil, England, India, Italy and Taiwan. This telecast allowed two-way live video and audio interaction between the faculty and attendees in the various countries, allowing for an in-depth exchange. As such, for example, participants at any international site could ask questions of the operating surgeon directly in the operating room during the live surgery. Nineteen renowned faculty and over 1900 worldwide attendees participated in this conference. The feedback from the attendees and the faculty was extremely positive. Authored by the Summit faculty, the papers comprising this supplement represent updated, current versions of the various presentations at the conference. Also, additional experts have been included to present a contemporary, comprehensive overview of renal surgery. We believe that discussions such as this serve to define the knowledge base for various facets of kidney surgery as it applies to daily practice, emphasize the technical nuances of current approaches to kidney surgery, and by allowing an assessment of worldwide outcome data, build a platform for future progress in the field. We are indebted to the BJU International Editor John Fitzpatrick, who himself was one of the Summit faculty, for graciously undertaking to publish this supplement.
