Abstract: The Epigenetic Story "We certainly need to remember that between genotype and phenotype, and connecting them to each other, there lies a whole complex of developmental processes. It is convenient to have a name for this complex: epigenotype seems suitable." -Conrad WaddingtonIn 1942, Conrad Waddington coined the word 'epigenetics' to describe the processes involved in the mechanisms by which genes bring about phenotypic effects (Waddington, 1942).Today, Epigenetics may be defi ned as the study of covalent and non-covalent modifi cations of DNA and histone proteins, and the mechanisms by which such modifi cations infl uence overall chromatin structure and function, which ultimately affect phenotype.
