Abstract: This article describes the development of single-cell models, their uses and accomplishments, the barriers to the greater adoption, and a perspective on challenges to the biochemical engineering community where the single-cell model approach may be used advantageously. In particular, it may become an important tool in relating genomic information to cellular regulation and dynamics.
