Emancipation ou désancrage social: deux représentations de la rupture parentale chez les pères n'ayant plus de contact avec leur enfant
Year: 1999
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents the results of a qualitative study on parental separation in Montreal, looking at around a dozen fathers who had no further contact with their child. The author distinguishes two different trajectories of disengagement. One is where life after the split is like a double emancipation: freedom from the conjugal bond and liberation from parental responsibility. The other is where the split is seen as social sacrilege : loss of the stable ties bonding everyday life. This second category can be divided into two sub-categories, one which can be described as fathers orphaned from their family, the other as fathers orphaned from their child. For each category, the trajectories of disengagement comprise different views of the family and of the child, and are the result of multiple, different factors which stem from the particular marital dynamics.
