Abstract: Zarca (Bernard).- Socio-occupational proximity between siblings and between their partners: a medium-term comparison Results from the "Family Network" survey carried out by Ined in 1976, identified a number of intergenerational transmissions of socio-occupational position from parents to children and their partners. These included transmission of the father's socio-occupational position to elder and younger brothers, and of the mother's labour force statute to elder and younger sisters (and even transfers to sons- and daughters-in-law), plus a tendency for them to be transmitted to all the brothers (and respectively sisters, brothers- and sisters-in-law), a pattern we have labelled "complementarity1. This article addresses the question of the stability of these phenomena over time. The "Proches et parents" survey conducted by Ined in 1990 is used to form a sample of sibling groups comparable to the previous one, which provides a basis for comparison over the medium-term. The phenomena of transmission and transfer are found to be present over time in all social categories though to varying degrees, with a trend towards a greater equality between siblings. On the other hand, the phenomena of complementarity are tending to lose their force, except among the small self-employed who form the most traditional sections of French society. This finding is consistent with what is known about the changes to the family during the period under review, in particular the greater individualism of family members.
