„… où mon nom n’était pas“

Year: 2012
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines intricate processes of knowledge transfer in which handwritten and oral messages were exchanged prior to or in conjunction with the circulation of printed text. Employing the anonymously published mystical texts by Madam Guyon as a case study, the article analyzes how information was conveyed in parallel with the circulation of the printed texts. The legal persecution of the author left traces that permit the exchanges of knowledge to be reconstructed. For a surprisingly long time, neither her texts nor the prohibitions against them named Madam Guyon; yet, an increasing number of her contemporaries knew that she was the writer. In this paper, the focus is limited to the purposes and effects of anonymous publications as well as the parallel exchanges of information. It is particularly noteworthy that, although the texts were published anonymously, the gender of the author is repeatedly emphasized.
