How to Train Your Dragon: Targeted Delivery of MicroRNA to Cancer Cells In Vivo
Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: The fundamental role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in both initiation and progression of cancer has made them attractive therapeutic targets.1 miRNAs can simultaneously alter expression of multiple target genes and often disrupt entire signaling networks, resulting in efficient changes in the activity and phenotype of target cells. At the same time, their broad functionality can be a liability that results in difficult-to-control off-target effects and toxicities. A report by Esposito et al. in this issue of Molecular Therapy provides a possible solution to the problem of cell-specific delivery of therapeutic miRNAs and represents an important step in the development of targeted miRNA mimics.
