Abstract: In light of his own experience, the president of the National Advisory Committee on Ethics in the Life Sciences and Healthcare (Comité consultatif national d’éthique pour les sciences de la vie et de la santé) discusses the “divinatory function” of medicine. He tries to analyse what can be attributed solely to rationality in preventive medicine and warns against the possible dangers of a behavioural prediction which stigmatises individuals.
