Abstract: Longevity of famous men. Secular evolution of life-times. A data base of 4 585 points, concerning famous men, allows us to explore the secular evolution of their longevity (life span)_from the 5th century BC to the 20th century. Women have been excluded because of small sample size, and individuals of less than 18 years for lack of justification of their celebrity. After a very unstable and poorly known period, we establish, starting in the 6th century AD, a linear increase (after logarithmic transformation) of the life span. In the same conditions, there is a regular decrease in the variability of the results. We note also that the mean life of famous men is clearly higher than that after 18 years of men in an ordinary population. The characteristics of this evolution are discussed in particular concerning the genetic and environmental parts of their determinism. The utility of a long life span is considered and an hypothesis of protection of the descendants of long life parents is proposed. This parental protection is favourable for their selection.
