Abstract: A creep apparatus was built to operate uninterruptedly for several weeks at rarefied atmospheres of pressure between 100 mTorr and lower than 1 mu Torr. Creep rates of zircaloy-4 tested in 100 mTorr of argon were faster than creep rates of the same alloy tested in air. The slower creep rates in air were attributed to the formation of an oxide surface layer.
