Why Canadian Homeowners Are More Conservative Than Tenants

Year: 1986
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Evidence is presented for the impact of homeownership on the political consciousness of urban Canadians. Two data sources are drawn upon: a national urban survey conducted in 1979 as the second phase of the Social Change in Canada study and in-depth interviews with 100 renters and homeowners living in a Vancouver suburb. Associations between housing tenure and a number of political attitudes are found, even when various stratification and life-cycle variables are controlled. The pattern of these associations is then examined to investigate the relevance of three hypotheses that have been proposed in the literature to explain the causal links between housing tenure and political consciousness.
