Quantum-information processing in strongly detuned optical cavities

Abstract: We demonstrate that quantum-information processing can be implemented with ions trapped in a far detuned optical cavity. For sufficiently large detuning the system becomes insensitive to cavity decay. Following recent experimental progress, this scheme can be implemented with currently or soon available technology.
