Influenza Virus Type a (pr 8 Strain) Multiplication in X‐irradiated Chick Embryonated Eggs: Virologic, Histologic, and Biochemical Studies

Year: 1958
Type: article
Abstract: Ionizing radiation causes profound metabolic changes within cells. Some specific effects as a result of ionization are the depolymerization and deamination of nucleic acid, the inactivation of sulpha-hydryl enzymes, and interference with nucleic acid systems16,17).These effects differ according to the animal species, age, nutritional condition, dosage and intensity of radiation among other things. It is assumed that such changes will greatly influence virus reproduction.Following X-radiation of host animals, the infection is enhanced in certain cases1-7) and inhibited in others8-14).Recently we have demonstrated that pre-irradiation or post-irradiation of embryonated hens' eggs infected with influenza virus markedly influenced development of the virus. The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether or not the metabolic alterations caused by X-irradiation would influence the initial development of influenza virus in fertile eggs and whether the histological changes caused by X-rays were correlated with virus reproduction.
