Abstract: TO THE EDITOR: We thank Ström and colleagues for their letter titled “Odunsi et al. Results From CM3 Cannot Be Extrapolated to Alginates in General” (1). We agree that the great variation in physical and chemical properties of fiber necessitates caution in generalizing the results obtained with a specific formulation. Therefore, the results of our study pertain specifically to the product evaluated, CM3, for the specified (10-day) treatment period and dose. We evaluated the commercially available product, following the manufacturer's instructions to the public and a prior publication (2). Incidentally, gastric emptying measured by stable isotope breath test was also not significantly altered by CM3 (ref. 2). We have reviewed elsewhere the disparate effects of different forms of fiber on gastric functions and satiation (3). We thank Ström et al. for acknowledging that it is important to critically appraise the effects of commercial products claiming effects on weight loss or appetite. Our study represents a model of the spectrum of gastric functions and hormonal responses that need to be evaluated to assess the physiological mechanisms potentially responsible for the claimed effects on weight loss and appetite. We encourage commercial entities to commission such studies to independent or academic research groups that have extensively validated the relevant physiological studies. The authors declared no conflict of interest.
