Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between theory and praxis in the American Masters of Fine Arts programme. It reviews how creative writing is taught in the American graduate context, and investigates the fracture between the study of literature carried out in English courses and the discipline of creative writing, a break that has long been discussed in literature about writing pedagogy. In addition, it will discuss literary scholarship relevant to the teaching of creative writing, and make comments about the kinds of theoretical endeavours that may be useful to the graduate student writer.
