Arms imports as an action‐reaction process: An empirical test of six pairs of developing nations
Year: 1986
Type: article
Abstract: Arms imports comprise a major component of the military programs of Third World countries, as they serve as a primary channel for acquisition of virtually all their equipment stockpiles. In this paper, we attempt to determine whether arms imports of Third World nations follow an action‐reaction behavior pattern. Using Richardson's (1960) formulation, six major races are analyzed: three in the Middle East and the other three in East Asia. The major findings reveal that while Middle Eastern nations clearly react to the armament behavior of their rivals, this has not proved to be the case in the East Asian region.
