Abstract: Equations are derived for the circular dichroism and optical rotation of light by a free electron on a helix which is of arbitrary size relative to the wavelength of light. The equations were found to give results in good agreement with measured rotation of microwaves by oriented wire helices. The derivation shows when the usual Rosenfeld approximation for optical activity becomes inadequate.
