Abstract: It is shown that a spectral method recently studied by the author enables one to obtain integrable nonlinear evolution equations on a grid of points exactly as was done on C N . The author also proves in the first-order case that there is always a way of going to the continuous limit which takes the 'discrete results' to those obtained by the continuous previous method. Hence, the method presented is potentially as fruitful as the continuous one: by it one can obtain all the results already known and new ones as well.
