When six is not a half dozen: Representation of changes in H4K5ac during meiotic progression in mouse oocytes

Type: article
Abstract: Histone acetylation patterns change during meiotic progression. Chromatin rearrangement results in an apparent increase in hyperacetylation between the non-surrounded nucleolus (top row) and surrounded nucleolus (middle row) DNA conformations. Progression from meiotic arrest to meiotic resumption results in deacetylation of chromatin (bottom row), a phenomenon that has been previously reported in mouse oocytes (Kim et al. 2003, J Cell Biol. 162: 37–46). Shown here are single confocal sections of mouse oocyte nuclei in various stages of cellcycle progression labeled for acetylated lysine 5 of histone 4. Confocal settings were kept the same for all image acquisitions. The original fluorescence images (left) were converted to look-up table [LUT] pseudocoloring (middle images) and three-dimensional topographical displays (right images) to view the dynamic nature of these changes.
