Terracotta figures of Animals from Colchis
Year: 1994
Type: article
Abstract: This article is devoted to the study of terracotta figures of tortoises and pigs found in two burials in Tsikhisdziri, Colchis (the eastern coast of the Black Sea). These figures date from the beginning of the 5th century ВС (the date of the burials is the second quarter of the 5th century ВС) and were produced in Rhodes. They turned up in this distant part of the ancient world thanks to traders from Athens or Greeks who had settled in Colchis : in Colchis they would have been regarded as attributes of Apollo (tortoises) and Demeter (pigs).
