Abstract: Measurements of thermophysical properties for solid materials, which are traceable to metrological standards, and network systems for combining the data producers and users are discussed. A Japanese national project for developing a new measurement technology of thermophysical properties and reference materials for solids started in 1997 with a five year term consisting of more than ten participating laboratories and universities. Details of this project are described as an example of the research on thermophysical properties for solid materials. Major goals of the project include development of precision measurement methods for bulk materials, standardization of methods for evaluating the uncertainty in measurement, establishment of reference materials with evaluated uncertainties in the properties, and development of advanced measurement methods for thin films and surfaces. Background ideas underlying the project are described from the viewpoint of data users of thermophysical properties. A system for data users supported by databases and measurements is discussed. A new idea, consisting of independent databases at data production and evaluation sites, is proposed as a network database system
