Abstract: Changes of resistant Escherichia coli strains and their conjugative R plasmids followed by the changes of chemotherapy occurred in Japan were described. The chemotherapy in Japan has changed from parallel usages of various drugs to the extensive and high dose usages of β-lactam antibiotics after 1975. As expected, β-lactam antibiotic resistant strains increased great-ly. But conjugative R plasmids have had rather qualitative changes, that is, conjugative R plasmids seemed to receive rearrangements of their genes and become fewer drug resistant forms or non (less) -conjugative forms from multiple drug resistant conjugative forms.
