Abstract: Claude Allègre’s determination to work towards ambitious education reforms was tested during the genesis of the high school reform (1988-1999). Refusing to take advantage of the dynamics created by the preliminary consultation and neglecting the support he could have received, he allowed reform opponents to define the terms of the debate. Their discourse, developing the denunciation of a "pedagogist" plot that supposedly was preparing the destruction of the school institution, provided the many-faceted opposition Claude Allègre encountered with an ideological basis that can be designated as "antipedagogism." Thus an age-old quarrel, promised to orient in a lasting way the assessment of educational questions by the civil society and the authorities, was reactivated thanks to clashes between the minister and his opponents. However based on a myth, the abundantly publicized antipedagogist point of view obscured the school debates and contributed a little more to the system’s paralysis.
