Abstract: It is well known that in a famous passage in Clio, Péguy said?history and memory form a right angle.? The article details the origin of this distinction during the historiographic reversal led by the new Sorbonne, Laville, Langlois and Seignobos, sworn enemies of the director of the Cahiers de la Quinzaine, great destroyer of the “intellectual party” and “historicizing history”. It also says that Péguy, the good and faithful Bergsonian, constantly tried to overcome the false oppositions between history and memory in the name of the productive clash between Clio and Chronos, between the past and life, and he never stopped recalling the historian’s enormous responsibility in the comprehension of the world.
