Abstract: Any description and compositional phonological analysis of intonation contours must make certain assumptions as to what constitutes linguistically relevant contrasts in this domain-that is, a semantics. As Pierrehumbert & Hirschberg (1990) observe, any theory cf transcription must be viewed as provisional unless it is supported by considerations both of sound structure and of interpretation. 1
