Abstract: The process of nonlinear propagation and distortion of Rayleigh waves in an isotropic solid is investigated theoretically. A set of coupled equations for the harmonic amplitudes is derived by means of Hamiltonian formalism. A time domain evolution equation is also derived for the disturbance on the surface of the solid. Numerical results for plane and circular Rayleigh waves are presented for an initially monochromatic wave that propagates in steel. It is shown that the horizontal component of the particle velocity wave forms a shock profile, while the vertical component forms a pulse. Finally, the governing equations are generalized to include diffracting nonlinear Rayleigh wave beams. a)On leave from the General Physics Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences, 38 Vavilov Street, 117942 Moscow, USSR.
