Abstract: Gabbroic rocks crop out over an area of at least 50 km 2 in the Darran Mountains of southern New Zealand. Work in the southern part of this body shows the predominant rock type to be leucocratic gabbronorite. The rocks become less basic from east to west — olivine is found only in the eastern part, and pyroxene Fe:Mg increases westward. Whole‐rock analyses show high Al 2 O 3 contents and fractionated REE patterns which are depleted relative to other basaltic rocks. It is suggested that these features are the result of crystal accumulation in a calcalkaline magma.
