Abstract: A technique is described that makes possible the stimulation of hypothalamic centers in goats.Since stereotaxic atlases are not available for the larger domestic animals, probes must be functionally placed.A Plexiglass plate containing 102 guide cannulas in a 2.0-by 2.5-cm area is surgically placed on the skull in such a way that the center block of the guide plate rests on the dm'a.Postoperatively in the unanesthetized goats, probes can be inserted through the cannulas.By means of the one surgical operation, various responses can be induced by the required functional placement of probes. Some of the responses of hypothalamic stimulation and other uses of the preparation are discussed.Several techniques have been developed to stimulate particular areas and to induce specific lesions in the brains of various species. All or parts of the brains of a few species have been systematically explored and mapped, making possible stereotaxic atlases (2, 6).No stereotaxie atlases are available for the larger domestic animals. Therefore, functional placement of electrodes is required.A technique for the functional placement of electrodes for large animals is described. It makes possible ahnost certain electrode placement and is relatively easy to utilize.A plate containing many guide cannulas that rest on the dura to form a grid is placed in the skull.Functional placement of electrodes in the brain is made later in the unanesthetized animals. Material and MethodsA ]5.6-ram-thick Plexiglass plate, as shown in Yignre 1, is prepared by first making a lip on each end of the plate 2.5 cm wide by 5 cm long,
