Is it true that coeliacs do not digest gliadin? Degradation pattern of gliadin in coeliac disease small intestinal mucosa: Figure 1

Year: 2009
Type: article
Abstract: Prolyl-endopeptidase supplementation has \nbeen proposed to favour gliadin degradation \nas an alternative treatment for coeliac \ndisease (CD), although the real usefulness \nof this therapy in vivo is still under discussion. \n1 However, our data point to alternative \ntreatments aiming to modify the intestinal \nmicrobiota in patients with CD by the use \nof probiotics and/or prebiotics. We propose \nthat the induction of gliadin proteolysis in \nthe human gut might not be the solution \nbut the origin of CD.
