Collor ou la politique de la mise en scène

Year: 1991
Type: article
Abstract: In a complex, rapidly changing society such as Brazil, political communication tends to increasingly depend on utterances to the detriment of argumentation and dialogue. Political actors are attaching ever greater importance to pragmatics, to forms of expression which communicate what cannot be communicated, this being unilateral expression, a manifestation of intent or sentiment. The Brazilian elections of1989 are one of the most striking illustrations of the role of television in political communication. In analyzing the presidential campaign it can be seen that Collor's successful television performances account for much of his electoral success, just as Lula s talented use of television won him the victory over Brizola that led him on the second round.
