The author of this article has drawn inspiration from the theoretical underpinnings of self-directed learning to try to link them to the transactional perspective of distance education. This attempt is all the more important because, for a number of English-speaking North American authors (Garrison, 2003;Moore, 2003;Saba, 2003), such a link would open a promising passageway to elaborating a theory of distance education which is currently sorely lacking.
