A structural and semantic analysis of classical Nahuatl kinship terminology

Year: 1982
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines kinship terminology in classical Nahuatl, addressing challenges such as variations in terms and their interpretation based on social and biological contexts. Using linguistic and ethnographic methods, it is demonstrated that kinship terms operate within two semantic spheres: one related to biological relationships and another concerning social and status relations. The study highlights the importance of understanding contextual use to accurately interpret Nahuatl culture and social structures, contributing to a deeper comprehension of their cultural and religious aspects associated with kinship
