Resource-based view of university-industry research collaboration

Year: 2012
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: --University-industry research collaboration offers\nboth parties involved recognised benefits. Universities can\nsecure funding for students and researchers, whereas companies\ncan gain access to science and technology to incorporate in\nimproved products. The performance of such collaborations\ncan be closely related to the resources available to the\ncollaborating organisations. Therefore, this paper will examine\nhow university-industry research collaborations can be\ndeveloped and managed through applying the key concepts of\nthe resource-based view of strategy. The research method is\ncomposed of two stages. The first stage involved a series of 32\nstructured interviews with representatives from companies and\nthe academic sector, which sought to ascertain the resources\nrequired for successful university-industry collaborations.\nQualitative assessment of the resources according to either being\ntangible, intangible or human related identified the capabilities\nrequired to underpin collaborations between universities and\ncompanies. The second stage involved a case study application\nof these capabilities to a major university-industry research\nprogramme. The case study investigation involved reflective\nanalysis of how the resources and capabilities were configured\nand deployed during the development and management phases\nof the programme. This allows generation of a set of\npractitioner oriented recommendations for establishing\nuniversity-industry collaborations.
