Recollections of Early Microplate Automation

Year: 2000
Type: article
Abstract: History is always fascinating. How did things start compared to what they are today? The microplate, which is such an integral part of today’s Drug Discovery programs, had its inception back in the early 1960s. It originated with Dr. Takatsky in Hungary. He conceived a tulip shaped loop (Figure 1), that would mix and transfer a set amount of liquid from one well to another, to be used in serial dilution testing. Dr. John Sever, who was working at the NIH, recognized the concept as a means of mechanizing the large amount of testing required for vaccine testing.
