Abstract: I was trained as a physician at Tufts Medical School where I had the opportunity to work in the laboratory of Ted Astwood, a premier endocrine researcher. This was my first taste of research, and I found it so exciting that in the summer of 1956, I actually braved a hurricane in order to go to the laboratory to finish an experiment. After medical school, I spent 2 years at Yale as an intern and assistant resident in internal medicine and then came to NIH in 1959 as a clinical associate in the Clinical Endocrinology Branch (CEB).
