Abstract: This paper examines the need to both develop and extend the role of the case study as a methodological tool. Particularly where problems are multi‐disciplinary or inter‐professional, the case study provides a vehicle for common understanding leading to rigorous analysis of the underlying biases and assumptions. The paper considers two models for writing the case study (closed v open approach) and discusses ways of using the case method before illustrating the rich catalogue and the flexibility in the types of case study approaches.
