Abstract: A detailed study of the self-modulation of a relativistic electron beam in an ondulator in the single-pass regime is carried out.Beam-parameter conditions are obtained under which the radiative instability in question occurs. The possibility of constructing a source of coherent radiation based on this principle is discussed. The radiation specifications of such a source are analyzed.Control the mass of longitudinal motion with the help of an additional longitudinal magnetic field introduced in the ondulator is discussed.Numerical examples are given for sources of submillimeter and infrared-range radiation.
