Abstract: For a period of several months the authors have had the opportunity to use a Dornier XL1 experimental lithotripter. With this device a detailed investigation of the role of acoustic cavitation in stone commination, has been undertaken using facsimile stones made of plaster of Paris. These results will be presented as well as studies of the nonlinear bubble dynamics of cavitation bubbles produced by the experimental lithotripter. [We acknowledge the Dornier Corporation for the use of the experimental lithotripter as well as support in part by the NIH.]
