Abstract: Professor Henry Sanoff is an internationally respected scholar who has been studying, publishing, and working with participatory design for more than forty years.His books and articles appear in several languages, and he has taught and served as a consultant all over the world.This article discusses the historical background of participatory design, its role in a democracy and in building community, and the different types of participation.
