Abstract: I would like to say thank you to all the mothers who participated in this project and the health visitors who made it possible. Especially, I would like to thank Elspeth Russell who negotiated many practical considerations of the research and encouraged other health visitors to be involved. I would like to show great appreciation to my supervisors, Dr Lorna Champion and Dr Eleanor Sutton, for their continued help and guidance throughout the writing of this thesis. I would also like to thank Professor Mick Power for his input. Lastly, I would like to say a big thank you to my family and Gustavo whose ongoing understanding and support were greatly appreciated.
