Abstract: Light sensitive, semisynthetic ion channels allow for the modulation of multiple channel properties. Covalent attachment of a photoswitchable spiropyran group to the entrance of a gramicidin A ion channel enables reversible control of both conductance and channel lifetime, which show opposite trends in behavior at high and low salt concentrations.
