Självkonceptet och Aspergers syndrom: En kvalitativ studie med åtta unga tjejer.

Year: 2010
Type: dissertation
Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore the formation of the self-concept in female adolescents with diagnosed Asperger syndrome. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight females between 16 and 19 years of age, who at the time of the study attended a school for youths with this diagnosis. The method of thematic analysis was employed. In the first step a number of themes were formulated and then, in the second step, structured according to the model of self-concept by Adamson, Hartman and Lyxell (1999). The main conclusions were that the extent of the diagnosis’ incorporation into the self-concept varied, and that even though a sense of being different was common, few participants expressed a desire to have it any other way. Pictures of the self in the past and future seemed to be present and the participants experienced a positive shift in the way they perceived themselves and their lives. Social relationships were described as important and family and friends constituted significant parts of the self-concept. The results are discussed in relation to the existing limited research on the subject, and suggestions for further research are presented.
