Differential responses to antimycin A and expressions of the Crabtree effect in selected Kluyveromyces spp.
Year: 2001
Type: article
Abstract: - When cells of selected Kluyveromyces strains were aerobically propagated in batch culture with glucose, cell growth, oxygen uptake and ethanol production exhibited differential responses to the respiratory inhibitor, antimycin A. Even within the species Kluyveromyces lactis (sensu Vaughan-Martini and Martini), which was previously thought to be genetically homogeneous, metabolic heterogeneity was observed among the type strains, representing the four formerly different species now grouped with the epithet K. lactis. Results of this study support the concept of physiological biodiversity within the species K. lactis, and suggest that expression of the Crabtree effect is more highly variable in these yeasts than previously thought.
