Genetic variation and genetic diversity in chicken populations using microsatellite assay

Year: 2007
Type: article
Abstract: Microsatellites are one of the recent markers widely used \nin gene marker studies, as they are abundant, co-~ominant, \nhighly polymorphic and dispersed throughout the genome. \nMicrosatellites are identified as reliable markers in chicken.(Romanov and Weigend 2001). \nBirds (212) representing 8 populations were utilized in \nthe present study. Blood samples were collected from the \nWbite Leghorn layer parent strains (WLH-IWD and WLHIWF) \nfrom AICRP on Poultry Breeding, Rajendranagar, the \nBabcock and the Vencobb commercial birds maintained at \nthe Department of Poultry Science, College of Veterinary \nScience, Hyderabad, the Aseel from the backyards of farmers \nof West Godavari and Srikakukam districts and non-descript \n(desi) birds from adjoining areas of Rajendranagar. Three \ndi-nucleotide microsatellite markers chosen randomly from \nthe list recommended by the FAO (Cheng et al. 1995) and \nmapped either in Compton or East Lansing reference \npopulations were genotyped. Blood samples (0.5-2.0 mVbird) \nwere coUected into the vacutainers containing EDTA (5.4 \nmg) from the wing vein.
