Sipuleucel-T (provenge) injection: the first immunotherapy agent (vaccine) for hormone-refractory prostate cancer.
Year: 2011
Type: article
Abstract: Therapies for prostate cancer depend on age, rate of the cancer’s growth, the specific benefits and drawbacks of treatment, and stage of disease. Patients older than 70 years of age with a slowly growing, localized tumor may be placed on active surveillance. Patients with localized disease, for whom watchful waiting is inadequate, can undergo surgical removal of the prostate or radiation therapy. Even with these options, the disease recurs in 20% to 30% of patients. For more advanced cases and for cancer that has spread beyond the prostate gland, andro gen-deprivation therapy is commonly used with or without surgery. 2,3
