Abstract: Polypeptide hormones, growth factors, and a variety of other naturally occurring ligands bind specifically to receptors on the cell surface. At physiologic temperatures these ligands are internalized by cells and associate intracellularly with lysosomes. Receptor-mediated internalization provides a simple mechanism that may act to couple receptor-mediated hormone degradation with receptor-medicated receptor regulation.
